    Useful and practical
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It’s an amazing book which is also very very user-friendly. Besides clear explanations of all the terminology such as “Ashtanga”, “Bandhas” and so on, it’s equipped with a spiral binding and a hard cover so that you could read/ watch it by practice the movements. In addition, it will teach a series movements instead of separate movements (like some Yoga books do) so that you could have an idea of the whole “flow” of the movements. It’s very useful and practical. I would strongly recommend this book to whoever wants to learn this amazing Ashtanga Yoga.

    not for beginners!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
this is a classic yoga manual that i’ve used for years, but beginners must be aware that it does not “teach” you how to do yoga. only an experienced yoga instructor can do that! if you’ve been practicing yoga with a teacher and would like to work on – i.e. PRACTICE – the primary series at home, this book is for you. the illustrations are wonderful, the descriptions helpful and accurate, and as others have mentioned the binding stays flat when opened, so it’s very easy to use while practicing.

    really excellent resource!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I wouldn’t learn Ashtanga from this book, but I wouldn’t want to practice it without this book. It contains modifications and advice on the primary and intermediate series, as well as finishing postures. It’s excellently photographed and lies flat, which is very helpful. I take Mysore classes and like to read about new positions to get another perspective on them, and extra pointers as a refresher. Highly, highly recommended.

Ashtanga really has to be learned from another person, I think, since it’s very intimidating and you do not want to hurt yourself. Swenson emphasizes safety and doing things at the right pace, which is what I think any teacher worth learning from would say. Enjoy your practice!

A great guide for personal practice

This book has made my Ashtanga Yoga practice fun and safe, with variations on the asanas that have helped me to advance slowly, slowly and practice, practice the rest of my life.

    Excellent supplement to yoga classes
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just started taking Ashtanga classes at a local studio. I asked my instructor for a recommendation to help me practice the asanas at home and this was what she directed me to. It’s perfect.

The book is designed well, meaning both the ease of using the spiral bound, and layout showing each pose in great detail. David shows the pose in a clear photo, with written instructions on how to enter the pose. Plus, he includes at least two modifications for every asana for those less flexible or with limitations preventing them from achieving the full pose.

Toward the end of the book he shows the “full flow” that shows snapshots of the pose in order for the Standing Series, Primary Series and Advanced. He also has the flow of Sun Salutation A & B. There are options for various vinyasa to plug in between the different asanas.

I’m a total beginner and have found this very easy to follow and not intimidating. I feel I’ll grow in my practice with this and use it throughout my Ashtanga education.

It is exactly what I was looking for. They sent it out on time and I got it on time. It came just as described and the binding is great, laying it out flat during yoga practice is great, easy to look at.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this book! it has all the positions you can think of, and different ways of doing each one to make them easier or more advanced. I loved how it showed the guy in the book doing yoga poses on cliffs and stuff. It was inspirational (although i won’t be doing that anytime soon!) It came in great condition, and quickly.

    Oh, it’s a PRACTICE manual
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars

This book would be wonderful for someone who has been practicing yoga for 10 plus years. Definitely not for the beginner. It’s like trying to read a foreign language even though there are definitions in the early chapters. I’m going to try to send it back.

ashtanga yoga the practice manual : An illustrated guide to personal pracitce
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The thing I like most about this book is the photos of primary and especially second series as it allows me to practice second series sequence on my own at home. I love the descriptions of the asanas and their alternate options and the photos of the whole series in the back. Very comprehensive book not for beginners. Perfect for the person w/a good solid primary series. I liked it so much that I showed it to two friends and they ordered it and are also using it at home.

Beautiful, wonderful book for ashtanga yoga practice

Ashtanga, even the primary series, is not great for beginners. But if you’re an experienced yogi of any type, this book is fabulous.

    Swenson’s Manual Is Best
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
David Swenson’s, Ashtanga Yoga: A Practice Manual, is the best yoga book I have seen. I was recommended to buy this book by my yoga instructor to keep up with practice while away for the summer. The book goes through each individual pose, while discussing important aspects that Swenson wants the reader to know. The manual puts the different positions together in both short and long routines to help the user establish their own routine depending on time constraints and offers different options for each pose depending on the user’s experience level. I recommend this book both to those who have experience and those who are just beginning!

great tool for deepening or beginning a personal yoga practice
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is an excellent way to explore each of the postures of Ashtanga yoga. It has foundational information about the basics such as breath, followed by each posture with variations, and guides for the standing, sitting, and closing sequences. It is a perfect gift for someone beginning a personal yoga practice or for the student looking to move on to second series postures.

    ashtanga for any level
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This practical and didactic book lives up to its title with photos and descriptions of every pose presented in the traditional Ashtanga order of practice. Although the images on the front might suggest that this book is only for those at an advanced level yoga practice, the modifications of key poses and the abbreviated sequences included make this book accessible for anyone, from beginner to aspiring Yogi, who wants to practice Ashtanga yoga. The spiral binding that allows the book to lay flat during one’s practice is especially nice, as are the suggested 30 and 45 min practices for those of us who are a bit crunched for time.

    fantastic ashtanga resource
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is a great resource!! It’s spiral bound so you can lay it flat on the floor. Using this book helps me learn the order (and names) of the poses when I’m practicing ashtanga at home. Also, the descriptions of the poses are very clear and there are pictures with modifications. I love this book!!!

    Excellent accompaniment for a teacher
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Having seen my ashtanga teachers use this product during classes years ago, I have followed their lead. In making the transition from student to teacher, this book has provided the necessary structure and resource to keep the “flow” of the class.

I would recommend this book to anyone

    Ahtanga Yoga the Practice Manuel
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I ordered this book on February 17th,2009 and still have not received this book. When I e-mailed marketplace@superbookdeals to find out where my book was they told me it takes 21 business days emphasizing “business days” but not giving me a time frame on when to expect the book. I would not recommend ever ordering from this comapany unless you are someone who enjoys ordering and paying for something that you may or may never receive when you need it.

A Yoga Book I Can Understand
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a great book to see how all the poses of the primary series work together, and it gives some great tips to improve my practice. The pages on mastering the “jump through” have been really helpful to me. I also like how it details the secondary series-gives me something to look forward to!

As if David Swanson became my personal teacher
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This wonderful practice manual has helped me to upgrade my yoga practice significantly.

It’s organized so “user friendly” that it’s as if David Swanson is right there next to me when I’m practicing.

    Yoga Beginner – Love it!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve taken yoga off and on for years. But in the recent months I had been very focused on the practice. When my yogi decided to move away I freaked out. Then he told me to purchase this book and we spent 30+ hours going through it together. The combination of the book and personal instruction was amazing. Then I found out my yogi had studied with David for a year. The book had everything we have been working on for the past 4 months…now I am ready for “self-practice” at the primary level. When I master that, then I can move on to the second series with no problems with the help of this book. Breath follows movement was the essential element that has really transformed my practice.

    Very Good Book
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been practicing “Power Yoga” for some time, but I found that I really wasn’t a big fan of that book. I wanted a different take on Ashtanga Yoga so I bought this. It is exactly what I’ve been looking for. From time to time I might want to review the specifics of a posture and this book has a full page description and pictures of every asana in proper sequence. It also has pages that show the different sequences of postures, and includes options for shortened sessions. These pages are excellent as a quick reference. This book is so much more straight forward than what I’d been using before.

One problem I can forsee with this book is the sprial binding. It looks like it will be difficult to keep the pages from eventually tearing loose, especially considereng that it will be a much used reference.

This is THE reference book for Ashtanga Yoga
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Of the many Ashtanga yoga teachers I have had the good fortune to study with, David Swenson is the best. This book is a MUST HAVE, even if you have a regular Ashtanga teacher in your area, which of course many people do not. Each pose of the primary and second series is thoroughly explained, with helpful commentary and suggestions for modifying each posture to make it more appropriate for your strength and flexibility level. There is also a helpful section on the philosophy behind the system. Your local teacher does not have time to go into this much detail in a regular class, but gaining the insight that David shares in this book is extremely helpful for taking your practice to a deeper level and broadening your understanding of the practice, whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner. And if you don’t have a local teacher, this book is invaluable. As an added bonus, it is spiral bound, so it will sit open on your floor and you can refer to it while you practice.

    The bible on yoga
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the excellent book on Ashtanga yoga. It provides all the details (lots of pictures) of the first and second series. Once you’ve attended class you can use this book to practice at home by just following the sequence.

But don’t buy the book unless you know what Ashtanga yoga is. If you want meditation, soft exercises, very deep postures, this style of yoga is not for you.

Sorry for calling it the bible since yoga has a Hindu origin. However, there is nothing hindu in the style of yoga presented in this book.
