Why Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga & Who is Jennifer Wolfe?
*****************

Whether you’re a yoga veteran in search of an active yoga routine, or you’re new to yoga, Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga gives you all the tools to make your pregnancy journey the best it can be. Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga is your support system leading to a more comfortable pregnancy, quicker and less painful labor, and a speedier postpartum recovery.

Jennifer Wolfe developed Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga during her own pregnancy when she realized that all styles of prenatal yoga offered, at the time, could not adequately prepare her physically and mentally for labor. She wanted a yoga practice that specifically served the needs of the pregnant woman: one that actively prepares women for the marathon event of childbirth, while helping women discover their power and inner strength needed during this transformative period in their lives.

Jennifer Wolfe found these empowering and strengthening qualities in the soft flow of Vinyasa Yoga. In her DVDs, she adapts Vinyasa Yoga for the unique needs of pregnant women, providing a system that works with your body without sacrificing the intensity necessary to prepare for childbirth. By learning to link your breath and movements in a constant flow, you’ll increase your ability to work with your body during labor and childbirth, reducing the need for medications or other interventions; including a decrease in the need for C-sections.

    Perfect!

I had bought this other pre- & post-natal yoga DVD prior to this one and was so disappointed because it really wasn’t a workout. I wanted something a bit more challenging. This is Vinyasa yoga, meaning “you will sweat” type yoga. It’s the faster type of yoga where you breath in for one pose and then out for the next pose. I love that she had 2 other ladies each at different stages of pregnancy (2nd & 3rd trimesters) demonstrating adjustment to the poses that are appropriate for your stage of pregnancy. HOWEVER, as I got bigger (and I got REALLY big) I found it too tough for me and had to give it up as I got into my 3rd trimester. But by then I was also dealing with gestational diabetes so strenuous exercises can do havoc to my blood sugar level making me dizzy and lightheaded. Otherwise I loved it!!

    great for experienced practitioners

I’ve taken yoga for years, and was put off by the idea of taking a pre-natal yoga class where I’d be re-learning mountain pose and the like, and barely getting a workout. My yoga instructor recommended this video, and I absolutely love it (and the “short forms” video by the same instructor). It’s hard enough to make me work, and offers great variations for different stages of pregnancy. If you’re already familiar with Yoga and are looking to keep your practice going through your pregnancy, this is the DVD for you!

    Great workout

I practiced Vinyasa style yoga before I was pregnant and would recommend this to anyone that is at an intermediate level and wants to still pursue yoga in their pregnancy, some of the postures were challenging and I even broke out in a little sweat. Great instructional DVD for all levels of pregnancy, again recommended to those that have practiced yoga before.

Great workout / Amazing preparation for childbirth!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga DVD was one of my best pregnancy purchases. :)

I wanted to be “in training” during my pregnancy, as I was hoping for a natural childbirth. Unable to find prenatal classes that worked with my schedule, I listened to the numerous positive reviews for Jennifer Wolfe’s videos, and I bought them during my first trimester.

My fitness background: I regularly use other ashtanga and vinyasa yoga videos, and I consider myself to be at an intermediate/advanced fitness level… probably intermediate when it comes to yoga.

I LOVED doing this video. I only had time to do this one once a weekend… the other days, I did either the 30 min or 45 min workout from the same instructor’s “Short Forms” DVD. I used these videos for my entire pregnancy (all 42 weeks of it!) Jennifer’s teaching style and cues are great- I found her really pleasant, calming, and easy to follow. I felt as though she knew exactly what my muscles were craving- my husband laughed at all of my “mmmmmms” and “ahhhhhs” while I was working out.

This workouts kept me sane and energetic. The modifications for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester were perfect for how I felt during each phase of my pregnancy. I definitely felt a big boost in my mental and physical state on days I did this video.

Obviously feeling good during pregnancy is important, but the strength this yoga training gave me during my childbirth experience was priceless. I did have my natural childbirth, complete with 6.5 hours of pushing. My (highly sought-after) OB now tells all of his patients to use Jennifer Wolfe’s yoga DVDs. :)

    Great at home prenatal workout
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I like to consider myself a moderately experienced yogi. I’ve been practicing for a handful of years. For this reason, I was looking for a prenatal yoga dvd that would offer more than just holding hands and breathing.

I wanted to find something that continued to challenge my practice throughout my pregnancy.

When the tape first started I was a bit concerned. There was a lot of breathing, shoulder rolls and neck circles.

But the next 55 minutes proceeded to kick my butt so badly that I shut it off 20 minutes before it was done.

It was an excellent work out. Exactly what I was looking for!

The woman in the video that is in her 3rd trimester is truly an inspiration. If I can continue to do the video during that stage of my pregnancy I will be impressed!

Well,I really don’t know what to rate this product.

Sometimes during your pregnancy, you feel so tired heavy and out of shape so you try to follow this Dvd’s excercises but you get so intimidated…they are not easy unless you used to do yoga before (which I was but not that often)and they are long…there are no breaks for a whole hour(of course you can pause the DVD and take a break but I prefer a smooth stop or break besides going through the hassel of forwarding and rewinding if u want to resume the excercise the next day).

On the other hand, some days especially when I started following this DVD on an almost daily basis..it became more fun and I felt the difference in my flexibility.

I do recommend this DVD but I just want to warn you not to push yourself in the beginning.

    Great yoga workout!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The first time I used this DVD, I was in that exhausted, sick, all-around awful phase of pregnancy: mid-first trimester. I thought I was going to die about 30 minutes in. I stopped and put the DVD on the shelf. I have been doing yoga for about 10 years, but it was too much for me in that condition.

However, I just gave it a second chance, at 12 weeks, and what a difference! I felt challenged and strong the entire time and made it through the entire practice without wanting to throw up or pass out. What is so awesome about this practice is that it targets all those areas that expand during pregnancy that you don’t want to expand, like the thighs and butt. Also, it gives you a chance to build and maintain strength in the shoulders, arms and back, which many pregnancy workouts do not.

I love that the practice is tough – just because I’m pregnant doesn’t mean I want my workouts to be easy. I highly recommend this to women who have taken enough yoga to be familiar with the poses and their variations.

Significant part of my prenatal life
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I did not buy this DVD until my 7th month and I worried it would go to waste as I would not have enough time to use it! I used it at least 4 times a week in my last trimester and was about to do this video when I went into labor. I do mostly vinyasa flow and found the other yoga DVDs to be fine for the days when I just wanted to relax, but this DVD challenged me and made me feel great. I liked the option for different length workouts and most often I did the 45 minute workout. I did pause the video at the kegels section to get a few extra kegels in. My husband often joined me and found it challenging. Jennifer is inspiring and this was a key part of the prenatal time in my life.

    Great Strengtheners
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The first time I did this video, I thought it was too fast-paced, but now that I’ve done it three times, I love it! You really feel yourself getting a workout, which is rare in prenatal yoga classes/videos in my experience. I do wish there was more of a breath/centering warmup, but the relaxation segment at the end is great. I would recommend this to anyone who is already comfortable with yoga, and wants to maintain her level of fitness throughout pregnancy.

    Good workout, but long
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I enjoyed this yoga workout. It is challenging and has modifications for each trimester. The only downside is that it is a lengthy workout (over an hour), so that makes it difficult to do during the work week. But it makes a great Saturday morning workout.

    Prenatal Yoga
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I purchased this in my second trimester. I had no idea which prenatal yoga video to purchase so I read reviews and chose this one. I have had moderate yoga experience and love yoga in general.

This video does not bring me the same joy in doing yoga as usual. It is too long and monotonous, I cannot seem to get through it in one sitting. Not because of fatigue but because of boredom. It is unfortunate that I did not buy another video, although I’m still not sure which video would suite me best. Hard to make good decisions with no previews online.

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I think this is a good yoga dvd. It is definitely challenging, which I like. I am probably a bit more than beginner at yoga – but I am athletic. I really wanted to find a pre-natal yoga dvd that would challenge me and this one definitely does that.

    Hard Core Prenatal Yoga
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Loved this video, until I became too big to continue doing it. It’s about 1.5 hours long, so make sure you have enough time, but it’s quite the prenatal workout, especially compared to the Gaiam video. Although later in my pregnancy that became what I preferred because it’s more restorative and slow placed. For those of you wanting a challenging prego-safe workout, I highly recommend this one.

    Challenging and enjoyable
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought a few prenatal yoga videos when I found out I was pregnant. This is the only video I have found challenging and completely enjoyable throughout my pregnancy (so far). During my first trimester, I got a pretty darn good workout. My second trimester, I felt challenged and well stretched. The third trimester modifications look like they will allow me to enjoy this video for the rest of my pregnancy. I really like that there are 3 workouts to choose from. If I’m in a hurry and just want a quick “pick me up”, the 15 minute workout is great. My favorite is the 30 minute. But if I’m feeling really good and have plenty of time, the 45 minute workout is excellent as well. When I finish my workout my muscles feel warm and worked. I feel nicely stretched and invigorated. It’s just right!

Repetitive, Quick Pace, Appropriate for Fit, Proficient Yoginis Looking for a Challenge
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The back of the DVD, as well as a majority of the Amazon reviews state that this video is for people who have been practicing yoga for awhile, and are familiar with more strenuous yoga. I considered myself more in that category than I probably should have. I’ve been doing prenatal yoga in a Power Vinyasa studio for a month now, and have been practicing using Rainbeau Mar’s ZenMama and Anna Getty’s Pre and Post-Natal Work out for twice a week, for six months. I thought this would be enough, but not enough for Jennifer Wolfe’s video.

The reflux I’ve been experiencing as I’ve neared my third trimester DEFINITELY flared up during practice, and if it hadn’t been for padding my knees (something I’ve been doing through my classes and videos), I don’t know how I could have got through as far as I did (1 hr mark.) Unlike my first experiences with the studio classes, and other previously mentioned videos, I felt my first time with this video feeling hurried, out of sync, uncomfortable (reflux) and overwhelmed. Maybe it’s just being pregnant, but I expect a little pampering with my practice during this time, which is something that Anna Getty and Rainbeau Mars communicate very well through their videos, and Jennifer Wolfe does not.

If this video interests you, and you’re fit and well practiced, then know that this is not a well produced video, and it’s not simple to just skip straight to the practice at the exact point you want. Also, if you need more visual cues (or are more practiced with the asana names to clue you in), these are few and far between, and the camera angle isn’t always good at showing the appropriate alignment (and there is little verbal coaching as to what you should be feeling to clue you in and self-adjust.) There is a lot of repetition, so if you’re more practiced in Ashtanga, this might be up your alley. However, if you believe variety is the spice of life, I echo other reviewers and tell you that you won’t find it here.

    Great workout -yoga style
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
While I am not really a yoga practitioner, I have always maintained myself in good shape. From months 1-5 I kept my jogging routine, then I switched to swimming months 6-8. Now, as I come closer to the due date and I kept hearing about the wonderful benefits of Yoga I tried first the Shiva Rea video, which I ended up dumping half-way through: I founded it boring and not challenging enough.

Then, I got this video and I find myself, one week away from actual due date, still practicing the vinyasa yoga.

I think it is a very good routine, and you don’t really need to have prior yoga experience, as long as you are in good physical shape. I only got the first series, and I do regret not knowing about the short forms, as the one thing I would prefer is having the ability to choose shorter workouts than the 75 minute routine which is certainly too long particularly if you are working and you do not have that much time available.

The production/music is rather simple and monotonous, but I still prefer this video to other options with better settings but not enough of a challenge or good preparation of your body for the birth of the baby.

    Regards.

    Best Prenatal Yoga DVD
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love Jennifer Wolfe’s prenatal yoga dvd! I purchased the dvd after reading many great reviews and have loved every minute of it! Before becoming pregnant I was very fit and active, doing power yoga 4 days a week. Once I became pregnant, I knew I wanted something that was more than just basic poses and stretches. I wanted a real workout! I was not disappointed with this dvd. The movements are challenging, but are able to be modified as you move through your pregnancy. This is a great yoga workout for mamas wanting something more challenging than the basics! Thanks Jennifer!

    Great pregnancy workout
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I really like this DVD. I have been doing it once a week since I was 8 weeks and am now 20 weeks. The instructor is really good with offering variations on each pose. There is a girl in her second trimester or a girl in her third trimester you can follow along with. I would say that it is designed for people who have been doing yoga for a little while as opposed to beginners. I do think it would be a bit overwhelming for beginners. I have been practicing yoga regularly for 5 years and have no problem finishing the DVD but certainly feel like it gives me a good workout. It puts me in a better mood, stretches my entire body and gives me energy. There are a few complaints that I have, the first and most annoying being the background noise of traffic outside their studio that you can hear over the music and instructor’s voice. Also it is a bit hard on my knees so I have to lay down a folded blanket on my mat for my knees, of course this mostly is due tile floor I have in my living room, if it was carpet underneath or even wood I don’t think I would have as much of a problem. Lastly, I don’t care for the shavasana (relaxation) I just turn it off there and relax on my own. But overall I really enjoy it and recommend it to those who are pregnant and like yoga.

Tough enough for a yoga pro!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am not a yoga pro, but I have taken numerous classes and I was afraid of getting a dvd that was too easy just because it was marketed for pregnant women. This is not!!! My husband would do this with me often during my pregnancy and it would kick both our *sses! Of course each move can be modified for your stage of pregnancy or level of yoga ability. Love this yoga workout. Highly recommend it!

    I don’t think she’s ever been pregnant
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I really didn’t like this DVD. I’ve done yoga for years, and am in very good shape. It is repetitive, boring, and doesn’t seem like it’s very well suited for pregnancy. She repeats a forward-leaning lunge series that just uncomfortable and (did I mention) boring. It would be fine if it was only one part of the practice, but it’s throughout – over and over and over and over…….. I did it once and I won’t do it again.

    Disappointed

  23. Maria C. Migoni on April 14th, 2010

    Too long and boring
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The workout is way too long and boring also is an advance level, so if you are a beginer and pregnant I wouldn’t try it. I am an active person I swim 3/4 of mile 3 times a week and I didn’t feel well after doing the workout it seem to be too much effort if you are pregnant and haven’t practice yoga. Sheva Rea’s prenatal is excellent I loved it, it is relaxing and easy to follow also perfect for advance or beginers levels.

  24. Alicia Gardner on April 14th, 2010

Great prenatal yoga for those that want to be challenged
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have practiced vinyasa style yoga off and on for many years, and every time I get back to it, I feel great and wonder why I hadn’t kept it up. This video allowed me to start my yoga routine back up now that I am pregnant. I tried general classes, but there were so many modifications I felt like a distraction to the rest of the class. This video is both challenging and informative for any woman expecting. Probably not the best choice for someone that has never practiced flow yoga before, as there are not many explanations, but even novices should get something from it. I love it and use it every week, I am so glad that I found this video.

    Too much repetition
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I wished there were a bit more variety in this DVD. It was great the first few times, and then I found myself yearing for a class where there might be a surprise or two thrown in. I’ve done workout dvds for years but this is the first where I felt bored after the first few times.
