What is Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga?
Whether you’re a yoga veteran in search of an active yoga routine, or you’re new to yoga, Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga gives you all the tools to make your pregnancy journey the best it can be. Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga is your support system leading to a more comfortable pregnancy, quicker and less painful labor, and a speedier postpartum recovery.
Jennifer Wolfe developed Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga during her own pregnancy when she realized that all styles of prenatal yoga offered, at the time, could not adequately prepare her physically and mentally for labor. She wanted a yoga practice that specifically served the needs of the pregnant woman: one that actively prepares women for the marathon event of childbirth, while helping women discover their power and inner strength needed during this transformative period in their lives.
Jennifer Wolfe found these empowering and strengthening qualities in the soft flow of Vinyasa Yoga. In her DVDs, she adapts Vinyasa Yoga for the unique needs of pregnant women, providing a system that works with your body without sacrificing the intensity necessary to prepare for childbirth. By learning to link your breath and movements in a constant flow, you’ll increase your ability to work with your body during labor and childbirth, reducing the need for medications or other interventions; including a decrease in the need for C-sections.

So-so
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I don’t prefer the music but the standing poses and squats make it an ok workout. The floor exercises are very short and I stop it here and hold the poses longer. I’ve tried the 45 min section 3 times and probably won’t do it again.
worth the purchase
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I really like this DVD considering I’m planning a natural birth w/o any pain meds. This DVD really helps you stretch and engage all of your muscles in your body that will help in labor and coping with those pains. The 15 min workout really helps you understand prenatal yoga and provides poses that are easy to do for a beginner like myself. You should definitely try it if your planning natural birth or just to help prepare your body and muscles for the aches and pains of pregnancy.
Highly recommend this DVD
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
A terrific DVD. Helped so much with balance, stretching and overall wellbeing during my 2nd pregnancy. The 1st pregnancy I had done yoga in studio but 2nd time around didn’t have the time, money or discipline for it. The DVD turned out to be an even better option. Even 15 mins a day will help your balance and keep your back and legs stretched esp as you reach the end. The presenter is great. Calm and encouraging without coming off like a over-exuberant cheerleader.
Great workout / Amazing preparation for childbirth!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This video was hands down the best purchase I made during my entire pregnancy.
I wanted to be “in training” during my pregnancy, as I was hoping for a natural childbirth. Unable to find prenatal classes that worked with my schedule, I listened to the numerous positive reviews for Jennifer Wolfe’s videos, and I bought them during my first trimester.
My fitness background: I regularly use other ashtanga and vinyasa yoga videos, and I consider myself to be at an intermediate/advanced fitness level… probably intermediate when it comes to yoga.
I LOVED doing this video. I did either the 30 min or 45 min workout almost every day throughout my entire pregnancy (all 42 weeks of it!) Jennifer’s teaching style and cues are great- I found her really pleasant, calming, and easy to follow. I felt as though she knew exactly what my muscles were craving- my husband laughed at all of my “mmmmmms” and “ahhhhhs” while I was working out.
This workout kept me sane and energetic. The modifications for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester were perfect for how I felt during each phase of my pregnancy. I definitely felt a big boost in my mental and physical state on days I did this video.
Obviously feeling good during pregnancy is important, but the strength it gave me during my childbirth experience was priceless. I DID have my natural childbirth, complete with 6.5 hours of pushing. My (highly sought-after) OB now tells all of his patients to use Jennifer Wolfe’s yoga DVDs!
A good challenging prenatal yoga practice
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Even though the back of this DVD says that beginners can do these practices if they start slow and do the third trimester modifications, I still wouldn’t really recommend this for future moms with no prior yoga experience. Not only is it more challenging than most other prenatal yoga DVDs, it’s a bit fast-paced so if you aren’t familiar with the terminology you might get lost pretty fast. That said, having practiced vinyasa yoga for the past five years, I really love this DVD. It feels like a good balance, less challenging than my usual practice, but still enough that I feel energized afterwards. There are quite a few lunges, as some other reviewers have pointed out, I happen to really like lunges and wanted to continue with them in pregnancy. However, they might not be your thing.
The thing I like most about this DVD is feeling like I don’t have to completely scale back my practice during my pregnancy, and can still continue with things like down dog, lunges for loosening up the hips (rather important in preparation for birth, I imagine) and a replacement for chaturanga that is proposed in the DVD (knees chest chin, no need for your belly to come in contact with the floor) .
The other really nice thing about this DVD, which is good in non-prenatal DVDS as well, is the fact that you can do either a 15 minute, 30 minute or 45 minute practice, depending on your energy level that day, as well as the amount of time you have to practice.
I will say too that I don’t necessarily think you need to have A LOT of yoga experience to use this DVD. I would say that if you have done at least three months or so of yoga classes, and are looking for a more challenging practice than most of the prenatal yoga DVDS on the market, you will like this DVD. As one other reviewer pointed out, it is nice to interchange these practices with a calmer practice on another DVD.
Helped with Pregnancy and Delivery
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been doing yoga for years and I loved this video. It was not too challenging for a novice, but felt like a real yoga practice. The best part was the different workout lengths. Some days in pregnancy 15 minutes is the most you can do… There were many things in this video I went back to in the delivery as well. It definitely made pregnancy and delivery a healthier experience for me.
Regular Ashtanga yoga practicioner, love this DVD
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am so thankful for discovering the Short Forms DVD.
I have been a regular Ashtanga practicioner for several years, and was having a hard time finding an alternative to Mysore when I discovered that I was pregnant. I was so concerned I would fall out of shape, but I wanted to follow Guruji’s advice and not practice Ashtanga the first trimester.
Other prenatal DVDs I came across seemed too gentle and I wasn’t getting a workout. Then I discovered this DVD. I do the 45 minute workout 4x a week. My legs feel great, I have little pain in my lower back and hips, my spine feels straight, and my arms feel strong.
Thanks to Jennifer Wolfe for offering this workout to those who cannot practice with her in person. This workout has truly been a lifesaver for me.
Vinyasa Yoga
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Yoga just basically makes you feel better when pregnant. This video is very thorough & provides a lot of explanation for alternate third trimester positions. If you like Vinyasa yoga, this is a great video. It keeps you moving & helps with flexibility, strength & breathing.
Good Vinyasa yoga workout
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This yoga practice is very good if you’re looking for a more challenging yoga workout. If you practiced yoga before you got pregnant and are looking for a more difficult workout you will be more satisfied with this than many other pregnancy yoga workouts. It moves at a good pace. The 15, 30, and 45 minutes practices are all a little different which gives a nice variety so you don’t get bored doing the same thing every time. It’s also nice to be able to choose which one you want based on the time you have available.
Great DVD!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this DVD. Not too easy, not too hard, just right. I am 7 months and practice every other day.
Great yoga DVD
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this DVD after being disappointed with the Shiva Rae one. This is a great yoga workout (not just stretching) and the poses can easily be modified to be more or less challenging. My only complaint is that I feel like sometimes the breathing is a little unclear – I often feeling like there are two breaths in before a breath out, although it may just be the style of the instructor that I need to get used to. All in all a great yoga workout.
Good active workout
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this based on reviews for two reasons: 1) it gives you the option of doing 15, 30, and 45 minute workouts which is very convenient if you don’t have a lot of time or if you want to do this after getting in some cardio. most of the other dvds are much longer, and i am more likely to use this one if i am short on time. 2) it was described as being a more vigorous workout than a lot of other prenatal yoga dvds. i think that is accurate, and its a good workout. however, while i was looking for a faster paced workout in my second trimester, now that i am entering third trimester i am actually looking to slow down a bit, so balancing this purchase out with a more calming yoga dvd might be a good idea.
Vinyasa Yoga
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Great prenatal yoga DVD. I like the option of 15,30,and 45 minute workouts. It’s nice they show variations for the different stages of pregnancy too.
Relaxing, stretching, varied ability levels, great labor prep!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an amazing video, and my favorite of the two I purchased. I also bought Anne Getty’s pre & post natal yoga. Anne’s is good, but much less active and a little boring, in my opinion. I prefer this Vinyasa yoga with Jennifer Wolfe, as it is relaxing, strengthening, and has the most options to suit any ability level and yoga need. The poses are my favorites. I am currently 22 weeks pregnant, and this video helps my sore and stiff back, neck, arms, and legs. It increases my circulation and helps me practice relaxation and breathing for labor. Jennifer inspires me and I wish she could be my doula! I had a small amount of experience with vinyasa yoga before my pregnancy (only about 4-6 weeks of classes) and then was not active for my first trimester due to extreme nausea. I was able to start right back in after being inactive for a long time, following modifications. This video will challenge and grow with my practice and prepare me well for labor and delivery. I only wish I had more time to do it every day!
Worthless
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This woman went to the double espresso school of yoga. She zips through the forms rather than having you hold them. Further, you also spend a LOT of time upside down, specifically in downward dog.
For someone claiming to be a doula and to have all this experience working with pregnant women, she should know that all being upside down accomplishes is having baby crammed into your lungs. That is not especially conducive to breathing. Further, she doesn’t give you time to get INTO a new pose. When a woman is in her 3rd trimester, there is no zipping through the forms the way she does.
One time she had a 3rd trimester woman adjust a form for a lunge by dropping her knee. Er…that’s not a complicated pose even in 3rd trimester. However, a downward dog that is more of a flat back than a downward dog would be a better modification.
Admittedly, the problem may be that perhaps I’m not aware of what Vinyasa means. Probably something like “really fast”.
After getting annoyed with the 15 minute workout, I watched some of the workouts and then gave up. I’m sending this one back.
I use this everyday!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am an advanced exerciser who prior to this pregnancy had started to enjoy vinyasa style yoga. So, when I stumbled upon this video after finding out I was pregnant with my second child, I was excited and ordered it immediately.
There are 3 workouts (15 min, 30 min and 45 min). All of the workouts are wonderful. They are intense and yet so relaxing. I primarily use the 30 minute workout before I go to bed. I have other prenatal yoga workouts but have only used this prenatal yoga dvd during this pregnancy.
At 32 weeks pregnant, I am still using this dvd daily and hope to be able to use it through the rest of my pregnancy.
Great overall prenatal yoga dvd
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been practicing yoga for awhile now (over 9 yrs) and I really enjoy a good workout from it. In the past, yoga has proven to be more toning and helpful for my back problems than any other form of exercise.
I was looking for a good yoga dvd that taught safe prenatal yoga techniques, but that still gave me a good workout. This DVD has been a great balance for if I am feeling more energetic, or just need a quick workout. I love that it is broken up into 3 time sequences – perfect for fitting it into my day when kids are napping, etc.
I highly recommend getting it, even for new yogis. It’s worth it.
Best Prenatal Video- not for newbies
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this prenatal yoga video, but users beware – this is not for new yogi’s. I have been doing yoga for a while, and this is a challenging video. The 45 minute section is for a workout, not gentle stretching. I am now 5 1/2 months along, and I already do some of the third trimester modifications. Its a great workout, but just be careful you know what you are doing and don’t overdo it.
Update
Changed my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars because I am still using this regularly, and I love it!
40 weeks prego (due tomorrow), still doing this video at least twice a week. Just finished teh 30 minute segment. I have had minimal back pain throughout my pregnancy, and I have to contribute that do the prenatal yoga! I have tried many videos, some renting through blockbuster online and some through purchase at amazon. This is by far my favorite and the best one I have used. It has a great flow, great modifications (which you can modify even more if you need to), and it is an actual workout. You will actually break a sweat! That is what I wanted, a way to stay stretched, strong, centered, and engergized throughout my pregnancy. This video did that! Dont waste you money on the others.
Fantastic! Highly recommend
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As a yoga teacher, I found this to be the best prenatal yoga dvd out there; knowledgeable. well paced. good cues and modifications. I absolutely recommend it!
Pregnant and Happy!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I too was looking for a yoga video that would be challenging as I was previously doing Bikram yoga until I was pregnant. The video isn’t as challenging as Bikram yoga (for obvious reasons), however it gets my heart rate high enough to experience a real workout.
Another great thing with this dvd is the option for various timed workouts allowing you to fit it in to a busy schedule, however the 45min workout is the best.
Best Prenatal Fitness Video I’ve Found So Far
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve been trying a lot of prenatal fitness videos lately, and I haven’t been all that impressed. My husband bought me this one for Christmas and it is head and shoulders above the other videos I’ve tried. Granted, it’s not the same as taking a class in person, but that’s not much of an option for me as a second-time mom, and I found Jennifer Wolfe’s approach to prenatal yoga to be fairly unique compared to other videos.
The modifications she’s made to create a vinyasa that will work in pregnancy feel very fluid to me (e.g., moving the thumbs together in downward-facing dog to allow room for a leg to come forward around a big belly). I tried some more strenuous yoga with my first pregnancy and found it too much for me, but this time around, with this video, I feel challenged but strong, especially in my arms and upper body. I’m also still experiencing the late 1st trimester exhaustion and was worried this would just leave me more tired; on the contrary, I left the practice feeling energized. My 3.5-year-old loved it, too. She did the 15-minute practice with me and then asked to do it again when we were done!
I love that I can choose to do a 15-, 30- or 45-minute practice. This really works well while I try to fit in exercise and keep up with a preschooler.
There were a couple of movements that tweaked some pains I have in my lower abdominal muscles/ligaments, but I just backed off and did a slightly less deep version of the stretch. I’ve never found a video that fit my body perfectly, pregnant or not, so I’ve become accustomed to modifying as my body directs me to.
Lunges get boring after a while
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This yoga dvd is fine a few times, but the repetition of so many lunges is boring after a few workouts. I would have liked a bit more variety. I own both her pre-natal yoga dvds and my comment would be the same for the other one as well.
Great Workout
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great yoga workout, especially for someone who regularly does yoga. It has a good pace. I found a lot of prenatal workouts to be too slow and boring. The best part is that you can choose the length of the workout.
Great Prenatal Yoga DVD
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great DVD for people who have been doing Vinyasa Yoga or Power Yoga. It’s definitely a bit of a challenge and it’s very convenient to have the choice between a 15, 30 or 45 minute session.
Excellent Pre Natal DVD
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
jennifer Wolfe’s pre natal DVD (the full 75 minute and short forms) is excellent. Modifications for all 3 trimesters of prenancy so you can do it from day 1 onwards! This DVD is probably best to be used if you have done some yoga practice before as it can move quite quickly, but it is not too quick to follow and Jennifers direction is excellent, so even if you are not looking at the TV you can follow what to do next. I would also recommend buying both the full routine and the Short Forms or just the short forms, as it means you can fit in yoga every day without having to put aside 75 mins. The short form includes a 15 minute practice. Highly recommended, I have been doing one of various practices every day and feel a huge benefit.
